A Blast From the Past!

Small Mammal Crew, goodtimes:

Donner Lake Open Water Swim, Truckee River:

Lava Beds, where the camera broke:

Farallones!

Rainier, Round 2!

Yesterday I went back to Mt. Rainier, to so some actual sight-seeing. It wasn't raining, which was a plus, but it was pretty cloudy. I was able to see the top of the mountain for a little while, then it got snowy and covered with clouds.

Here is a glacial scar from the Nisqually Glacier:

The glaciers are really visible:

I finally made it to Paradise, where the view of Rainier is supposed to be awesome. It was, but that is when it got snowy. I did see a climber in the ice field trekking along-scary! The wildflower meadows were beautiful with their autumn colors!

This is Narada Falls:

I took a break to eat a cookie, and this little guy decided to sit on my car door, and steal crumbs:

A Day Off!

So I got my first days off after about a week and a half of work. Nice! I did a bunch of errands, super fun, and then I went da da da...the capitol of Washington...Olympia! Yea, it was pretty anticlimactic. I stopped off at the Olympic National Park visitor center, but the park was still a few hours away (weird) and got info on where to go with the few hours I had to kill. So I went to the farmer's market. And what do I find there?

I can't get away from those dang Germans! Hahahaha!! Prost!

I got lunch at this joint...the crab melt was more cheese than anything else, so I was not impressed.

I wanted to go the Japanese Garden...which was clearly marked on my map. But after driving in squares around the vicinity for about 20 minutes, I couldn't find it and gave up - it does not exist! So then I drove around more and got lost for a bunch more time. So I gave up, and decided to go to Tumwater. I ended up at a park where the salmon swim up-river to spawn in the fall, but no salmon.

I was pretty frustrated, and I started to run into traffic, so I drove around just a little more, and got to see more beautiful fall colors. Autumn here is totally different than at home...there are color changes! Can you see the capitol building?

Marv...

My new digs

Here is House 4 in Pack Forest...a few miles away from the town of Eatonville. A very small town... My room is on the first floor on the far left, right next to the kennels.

My room...I spent quite a while decorating it, and creating the best ambience that I could, haha. Notice my see through curtains.

The living room. Pretty messy, no wonder we have a ton of mice.

The kitchen...pretty decent. Lots of appliances and junk. But messy too.

This is the garage and we keep most of the dogs in. They all have their own crate with a sheet on top to give them privacy, and to prevent stare-downs.

Dogs, Dogs, Dogs!!!

So here are most of the dogs...super drivey bunch. I guess that's what makes them good working pups!

Tucker is one of the best dogs here. He listens all the time, and is super sweet. I hope I get to take him to Alberta! Fingers crossed!

This is Shrek. He is pittie/lab mix. Super crazy, he gets pretty sassy after you tell him to stop pulling on the leash for the 648th time.

Luke, one of the other new handlers, with Scooby. Scoobs is still really puppish, he even pees in his crate still, doh! I worked with him on sit last week, and he is sooooo much better, yay!

This is Sadie, and if you are really trying to get her attention it's Sadie Mae! She has a ton of pulling you around energy.

Petey monster. He is pretty cute, and bouncy. He is a pro at tearing up blankets into little shreds, and then hiding it poop under it, ick!

This old guy, who acts like he's a young'un, is Orion or better known as Ori. I hear he was frickin' wild when they got him last year, but he's mellowed out a bit. He barks like no other during feeding time though.

Mason is the biggest dog we've got. He's super sweet, don't you love to droopey eyes?

Here's my buddy Marvin! He is the easiest dog, he just sits in his kennel, need minimal attention or time outside. His sad face is a result of the stock market plunge...he had a lot invested in his E-trade stock, and his 401K is now a 201K.

Lulu is a sweet dog. But dang! She cries and freaks out all the time when you take other dogs out, she is an attention whore...

Casey is our other small dog. He is a handful! He pulls a lot for a tiny guy, and he barks his head off...joy for me since my room is right next to the garage!

Alli is one of my favorites! She reminds me a little of Nova. She can be a devil...she is known to escape from her kennel and bite strangers...so beware!

Long drive gone by...

So...I made it to Washington state, Eatonville to be exact. It took me 2 days to drive up, and I stopped in Eugene for the night. I passed thru Weed, CA and took some pics of Mt. Shasta, then spent more monotonous hours on I-5.

I also took a detour of Mt. Rainier before getting to Eatonville. It was amazing! I kept trying to see it from the car, then BAM! There it was...covered in snow, and gigantic.

I started my new job as a canine handler for scat scent dogs for the group Conservation Canines, affiliated with UW. I am living in a house in Pack Forest, and of course my room is right next to the dog kennels...oh joy! Right now I am a glorified dog walker, that only gets paid for half the hours that I actually work. I am up at 7am to take the dogs (13 of them right now) to pee/poop, and then breakfast. Then I get an hour break for my breakfast, then out for 2-3hrs of exercising them! So I am pretty much hiking, walking, and biking them all around Pack Forest. Then another hour or so break for lunch. And then back out at 1pm for another 2-3hr round of exercising. Then another break before short potty break walks, followed by dinner. And then my last shift is around 10-11pm for a last potty break before bedtime. I am exhausted! But, I hope in a few days I will get some new training for scat related work. Then I will be exercising and training, probably with no breaks at all, haha!

In the beginning of December they are going to send me, and 3 other dogs handlers (2 other new ones) to NE Alberta, Canada to search for wolf, moose, and caribou scat around the oil extraction camps. The main mission of this organization is to do non-invasive scientific research in terms of human impact on the natural populations. So we collect scat of target species and then send them back to the lab at UW to analyze for stress and reproductive hormones...blah blah blah. Anyway, I am just looking forward to hanging out with a dog, and doing field work, and getting paid for it!! Yay!

OK...I'm tired.
